June 2004 - Route: East Maui tour from Kahului Airport, counter-clockwise.
While in Maui, I stayed at The Fairmont Kea Lani. This is a POSH hotel with nice pools and a beach.
This view of the East Maui mountain was taken from the Fairmont. The top of the mountain was in cloud the entire time I was there.
I should have rented a car for convenience. The next best thing is a SpeediShuttle. The hard part is describing where you want to go to the driver. (The end of a desolate little road near the control tower, by a rusty old gate, at Kahului Airport, Maui.)
Here is the rusty old gate. Beyond it airside is Maui Aviators.
I rented a Cessna 172L with instructor Fletch Miller. Since I didn't have time for a proper checkride, I just brought Feltch along for the tour. I am 5' 9" tall, the shorter guy.
Here is The Fairmon Kea Lani from 500 ft. MSL.
Somewhere down there are the remains of Charles Lindbergh.
The American Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association calls Kahului Airport the "windiest" airport in the USA. I received this certificate for my crosswind landing - 100% rudder deflection.
Back on the ground, I caught this sunset.
